"Babe Ruth"
(1895-1948) best known as "Babe" Ruth and nicknamed "the Bambino" and "the Sultan of Swat", was an American Major League baseball player from 1914-1935.
Bank Check Signed "G H Ruth", 8x3 inch. New York 5, 1942. Imprinted "Babe Ruth" at the left. Chemical Bank check made payable by Ruth to "Cash" for $ 50.00. Not endorsed. Tiny bank cancellation holes do not touch signature. Check is encapsulated by PSA/DNA ("Cerfitied Autograph Grade NM/MT8") for protection and authenticity.
The stamping on versy certifying that this check was paid by Chemical Bank & Trust Company, New York, on May 5, 1942, the day it was signed, and the fact that it is not endorsed indicates that Babe Ruth cashed it at the bank on Broadway and 73rd Street in Manhattan, about 10 blocks from his Riverside Drive apartment. On May 5, 1942 just five miles noth, at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees were facing the Chicago White Sox. Led by Joe Di Maggio's four RBIs, including a game ending triple in the 10th inning, the Yankees completed a four-game sweep of the Sox. The next day, the second place Bronx Bombers knoecked the league leading Cleveleand Indians out of first place and never looked back, winning their 13th Amercan League pennant, their sixth in seven years, by nine games. JSA grated and certificated. |
